Vernon Davis with final touchdown in 36-32 victory over Saints

Does defense really win championships? Well I’d say this Niners defense is capable of carrying them all the way to the Super Bowl. After one of the most exciting playoff games I’ve ever watched, the Niners are one victory away from the Super Bowl. The Niners will play the winner of the Green Bay Packers and New York Giants game. Either way, we’re ready for them! (I’m hoping it’s the Giants at the Stick!)

49ers v Saints

The 49er, Saints divisional playoff game is just around the corner. The forty niner defense will face off against the power house offense led by Drew Brees. The 49er Faithful at the Stick and watching at home are geared up and excited to see the red and gold back in the playoffs for the first time in nine years. The Niners have a championship caliber team and will need to get past the Who Dat Nation first before they can return to the glory of the 80’s. Enough with the Saints and its obnoxious Who Dat talk. Who Dat they ask? We dat! We dat team say dey gonna beat the Saints! We Dat! (if your thinking I had a small seizure and forgot basic grammar look up the Saints Who Dat chant) There will be a couple of keys to a San Francisco victory over New Orleans.

Key One: Getting pressure on Drew Brees

Fiesta Bowl Summary

This On Campus Sports story was written for the Fiesta Bowl. I was required to write more toward the Stanford side even though they were the losing team. You can read the full story below or go directly to my story by clicking this link.

Stanford ran out of Luck in final minutes of Fiesta Bowl.

It was a battle between No. 3 and No. 4, a battle of the 11-1’s and a battle of high-powered offenses, but it was Oklahoma State who came out on top 41-38 Monday at the end of the wild Tostitas Fiesta Bowl in Glendale, Arizona.

Stanford’s redshirt freshman Jordan Williamson missed a 35-yard field goal during the end of regulation, kicking it wide left as the final two seconds expired. He had another shot to redeem himself with a 43-yard field goal in overtime, but after a bad snap the laces weren’t out and Williamson walked off the field with his head down. Andrew Luck and the Cardinal watched from the sideline as Oklahoma State took away Stanford’s hope for a second straight BCS bowl victory

No. 3 and No. 4 square off in Fiesta Bowl

Andrew Luck and No. 4 Stanford face off against Brandon Weeden and No. 3 Oklahoma State in one of this year’s most highly anticipated BCS bowl games. The Cardinal and the Cowboys will battle in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl in the University of Phoenix Stadium on Monday, Jan. 2, in Glendale, Arizona.

Both teams ended the season at 11-1, and both made strong cases for the national title. However, Stanford’s hopes for a  national title were diminished after a 53-30 loss to then-No. 6 Oregon. The Cowboys, meanwhile, lost a double-overtime heartbreaker to Iowa State, 37-31.

Pac-12 Championship

My third story for On Campus Sports was about the inaugural Pac-12 championship game between the Oregon Ducks and the UCLA Bruins. It wasn’t the championship match up people had hoped for, but the Bruins gave it a good run against the Ducks at Autzen Stadium.

Oregon celebrates: roses, trophies, confetti oh my!

The Oregon Ducks celebrated their 49-31 victory over UCLA with roses, fireworks, confetti, and fans who rushed the field as the final minutes expired.

The Ducks earned their bid to the Rose Bowl where they will play the winner of the inaugural Big Ten championship game, the Wisconsin Badgers.

The victory marks the Ducks’ third consecutive conference championship and second Rose Bowl appearance since head coach Chip Kelly’s first season in Eugene. Kelly led the Ducks to the Rose Bowl in 2010, where they lost to Ohio State, and last season the they fell to Auburn in the BCS championship game.

Every college football season the Heisman Trophy is awarded to the most outstanding college football player in the United States…no big deal. It is now the most sought after award for any college football player. Receiving the Heisman means your the toughest, the smartest, the hardest working and most skilled player among thousands of others who play at the collegiate level. The winner is selected by journalists and there are a total of 870 selected media voters. Former Heisman winners also have the opportunity to vote and there are presently 55. Each voter has to pick three candidates and place them in order of their first, second and third pick. The first-place selection receives three points, while the second receives two points and the last receives one point.

The Bears roll over Arizona State

In my second story for On Campus Sports, I wrote about the California Bears and Arizona State football game. Hope that all my Bay Area readers appreciate it! Roll on you bears!

Click here to read the story from the website, or you can read it below.

The Bears roll past Arizona State in offensive showdown

It was an offensive shootout Friday night in Tempe as California rolled over Arizona State 47-38.

It was all offense all day for both teams, and the Golden Bears were firing on all cylinders from the start. Cal scored on nine of 12 drives and its first three possessions all resulted in points on the board.

Cal’s offense combined for a total of 484 yards, and the Bears finished the season 7-5. The victory enhances Cal’s chances to compete in a more prestigious bowl game come December.

QB Zach Maynard, who completed 19 of 26 for 237 yards, also threw one touchdown pass and ran the ball in for a 16-yard score. He combined with running backs Isi Sofele and C.J Anderson to put the Golden Bears on top.

Nebraska falls to Michigan in Big House

I have recently earned an internship for a sports website called OnCampusSports.com. It features college sports written by college students. I would love for you to check out my articles and other writers on the site, and keep checking back for more stories. Here is the first story I wrote for On Campus Sports:

You can click on this link to view the story on the website, or simply read it below. Enjoy!

Cornhuskers dig their own grave in Big Ten Big House debut.

Numbers never lie, and it was the shocking numbers, or lack thereof, put up by the Nebraska Cornhuskers that led to their 45-17 loss to Michigan in the Big House.

Nebraska beat themselves this game, committing mistake after mistake, while Michigan capitalized on each one of them.

The Huskers had a whopping 11 first downs, went 3-13 on third downs, totaled 254 yards and held possession of the ball for only eighteen minutes of the game. Michigan’s numbers almost doubled that of Nebraska’s in every category, except for turnovers.

Fantasy Football 101

There is no doubt that the world of fantasy football has engulfed the lives of many men in America. Fantasy football? What ever happened to just rooting for your team on Sunday? Now we have die hard fans rooting against their own team because their fantasy running back is playing against them, and they care about watching games that don’t even matter because they have fantasy players getting points for them. Men have become even more consumed by football and it is all thanks to fantasy. I can no longer go home on Sunday to watch the 49ers with my dad without hearing about every game and every player he has on his fantasy roster. If the niners aren’t playing, than we are watching the NFL Redzone for hours, making sure we see every point scoring play by “his guys.” Since when is a Rams player considered to be your guy dad? Just doesn’t seem right. Fantasy football has completely changed the way guys watch football and it’s popularity only continues to grow. I had to finally figure out what all the hype was about and get involved with fantasy myself. Now I’m here to give you the 411 on the fantasy football phenomenon and details about how the whole crazy thing works.

NFL Week 10

The San Francisco 49ers are simply unstoppable, beating down the New York Giants in a 27-20 victory

The Niners move to 8-1 and hold a commanding lead in the NFL West. This victory came without the help of star running back, Frank Gore, who went down with a knee injury.  Gore’s five-game 100 yard rushing streak may have ended this game, but the 49ers are still rolling. This was a major victory for San Francisco and proved that their season hasn’t been some miraculous fluke. Newsflash haters: the Niners are here to stay! Offensive help came from David Akers who kicked four field goals to help San Francisco stay on top. Akers had three first half field goals from 36, 52 and 39 yards. Neither team had many rushing yards, the Giants with a total of 93 and the Niners total of 77. The Niners defense intercepted Eli Manning twice, and this marked its 31st consecutive game without allowing a 100-yard rusher. With Gore out of the picture, quarter back Alex Smith went to work, completing 19 of 30 passes for 242 yards and a touchdown. He connected with at least four different receivers at three completions a piece, including game leading receiver Delanie Walker who had six receptions for 69 yards. Next week the 49ers take on the Arizona Cardinals at the Stick. Can’t wait! ..I’ll be there watching!
